Dublin, Ireland (World Wide Gamble) - Republic of Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham decided to retire from international football on Thursday.

The country's captain made the decision after the Republic of Ireland failed to qualify for the World Cup finals next summer in Germany.

The 34-year-old Cunningham won 72 caps, but was very disappointed after Wednesday's draw with France that allowed its opponents to win Group 4.

Cunningham will remain on the pitch with Birmingham City.
