BOXING: 2010 National Championships End with a Bang

The 2010 USA Boxing National Championship concluded with a bang as the best boxers in the country squared off in a center-stage atmosphere inside the Crowne Plaza Hotel in ballroom in Colorado Springs Saturday evening.

In just the second bout of the afternoon there was an upset in the 119 lbs/featherweight division, Lauren Fisher (Indiana, Pa..), dec. multiple returning national champion Sacred Downing (Trenton, N.J.), 17-14, to earn the Outstanding Boxer aware.

Colorado native and hometown hero, 108 lbs/light flyweight, Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.) dec. Diego Hurtado (Sparks, Nev.), 31-15, and would earn the Outstanding Male boxer award.

In an exciting match up 114 lbs/flyweight division, two-time Olympian Rau'shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio), stopped Miguel Cartegena (Philadelphia, Pa.), RET-2 (1:40).

TRACK & FIELD: Oliver Breaks American Record in Paris

2010 USA Outdoors champion David Oliver set the American record in the men's 110m hurdles Friday night in Paris at the Samsung IAAF Diamond League Meeting Areva.

With his long and strong strides, Oliver made a quick start to lead the race in its entirety and finish in an American record time of 12.89 seconds. It was just two weeks ago at the Nike Prefontaine Classic when Oliver equaled the American record of 12.90 seconds, first posted by Dominique Arnold in 2006. Oliver's sizzling 12.89 was two hundredths of a second off the two-year-old world record of 12.87, set by Dayron Robles (CUB) in Ostrava.

Also bringing sparkle to the track, Jeremy Wariner made it four-for-four in Samsung Diamond League 400m races this season when he clocked a world-leading time of 44.49 seconds. The three-time World Outdoor medalist has returned strong from his knee surgery last September to run two world leading times, first at last week's Lausanne (44.57) and then again Friday in Paris.

Also at the track, national champion Brittney Reese sealed her victory in the women's long jump competition in her last round jump of 6.79m/22-3.5. This performance propels Reese into the top spot of the Samsung Diamond League.

Filling out a deep field in the women's 1,500m, seven women brought sub-four minute career bests to the line. Crossing the line first, Russia's Anna Alminova clocked a world-leading time of 3:57.65. On her heels, USA Outdoors fourth-place finisher Christin Wurth- Thomas ran a new personal best at 3:59.59 to take second.

Americans Allyson Felix (22.14) and Shalonda Solomon (22.55) finished one and two in the women's 200m race.

BASKETBALL: U17 Women's Team Cruising at Worlds

The 2010 USA Women's U17 World Championship Team (3-0) wasted no time jumping on Canada (1-2) and never let up, cruising to a 114-57 win that featured points from all 12 U.S. players in preliminary round play of the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship on July 18 in Rodez, France.

In three preliminary round victories over Canada, China and host France, the U.S. Team's average margin of victory is 42 points.

CYCLING: 20 national champs crowned on final day of Mountain Bike Nationals

Competition wrapped up at the SolVista Bike Park on Sunday as 20 more national champions were crowned in short track cross country, Super D, and downhill racing. Todd Wells (Durango, Colo.) grabbed his second national title of the weekend in the pro men's short track while Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) powered to the win in the women's race.

Wells capped off a stellar weekend of racing with a second national title on Sunday. After winning the cross country event on Saturday, the Colorado rider powered his way to another Stars-and-Stripes jersey in the pro men's short track event, again finishing ahead of silver medalist Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (Boulder, Colo.). Wells set a super- fast pace at the front, and despite an impressive chase effort by JHK and Sam Schultz (Missoula, Mont.), his pace simply couldn't be matched.

WATER POLO: USA Men Take Fifth Place At FINA World League Super Final

The USA Men's National Team took home fifth place at the FINA World League Super Final with a 7-6 defeat over Spain. Behind two goals each from Tim Hutten (Seal Beach, Calif.) and Jesse Smith (Coronado, Calif.) the United States rallied from an early deficit to pull out the victory. Merrill Moses (Palos Verdes, Calif.) went the distance in the cage stopping nine shots.

BASEBALL: USA Completes Sweep of Korea

George Springer (Connecticut) roped a pair of doubles on his way to a three-hit performance and Sean Gilmartin (Florida State) struck out five for his second win of the summer as Team USA completed the five-game series sweep of Korea with a 5-3 win Sunday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. With the win the Collegiate National Team (CNT) improves to 6-0 during its summer tour.The 18U National team will then travel to Minnesota for nine exhibition games against area all-star teams and international opponents, before embarking on the 2010 IBAF "AAA" (18U) World Junior Championships from July 23-Aug. 1.

GYMNASTICS: Allen, Rodrigues win mixed pair gold at Arco World Champs

2009 World Games gold-medalists Kristin Allen and her mixed pair partner Michael Rodrigues, both of Livermore, Calif., won the mixed-pair gold medal at the 2010 World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships in Wroclaw, Poland. This is the USA's sixth straight world medal in mixed pair.

SAILING: Railey, Kiss Secure Medals as Laser World Championships

US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics' (USSTAG) Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) and US Sailing Development Team's (USSDT) Mitchell Kiss (Holland, Mich.) conquered a wide range of conditions to win bronze medals in the women's and men's divisions, respectively, at the Laser Radial World Championship in Largs, Scotland.

SWIMMING: Open Water World Championship Results

USA Swimming National Team member Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.) finished fourth in the men's 10K race Sunday at the FINA Open Water World Championships in Roberval, Quebec, Canada. Crippen's time of 2:01.05 was less than six seconds behind the winning time of Italy's Valerio Cleri, who won in 2:00:59.30. 2005 World Championship gold medalist Chip Peterson (Pine Knoll Shores, N.C) finished seventh.

TAEKWONDO: U.S. on to Quarterfinals at World Cup Team Championships

With a 4-0 sweep of Vietnam on Sunday, the U.S. women's team qualified for Tuesday's quarterfinal round at the WTF World Cup Team Taekwondo Championships in Urumqi, China. A 3-1 victory over Thailand on Monday secured a berth in Tuesday's quarterfinal round for the U.S. men's team. The top eight teams from the round-robin portion advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinal round. The semifinal and final rounds will also take place on Tuesday. The U.S. men's team finished as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Turkey in the quarterfinals. The American women's team will be the No. 7 seed and will also face Turkey in the quarterfinal round.

TRIATHLON: U.S. Earns Three Top-10 Finishes in Hamburg

Americans Laura Bennett and Sarah Groff stayed with the lead pack to nab top-10 finishes in Sunday's 2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series race. The previous day, USA Triathlon National Team standout Jarrod Shoemaker placed seventh to record a third straight top-10 finish in the 2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series.

A record field of paratriathletes took to the Hudson River, the West Side Highway and Central Park on Sunday at the 2010 Accenture USA Paratriathlon National Championship, which was held in conjunction with the Nautica New York City Triathlon. Twelve athletes claimed individual national titles, and each competitor that bested the four- hour mark qualified to compete at September's ITU Paratriathlon World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.

Racing for the first time in two years due to injury, veteran Willie Stewart (Boise, Idaho) posted the top overall finish in the Olympic distance event in 2 hours, 16 minutes, 14 seconds to take home the TRI-4 category. Robin Caruso (Ridgefield, Conn.) repeated as women's TRI-4 champion in 2:54:24 and logged the top women's time of the day. A total of eight national champions were repeat winners from a year ago.

VOLLEYBALL: Dalhausser & Rogers Continue To Roll

At Hermosa Beach, Calif., this weekend, Olympic beach volleyball gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers won the AVP Hermosa Beach Open on Sunday for the fifth year in a row. Jennifer Kessy and April Ross won the women's bracket, securing their fourth straight AVP Tour victory this season.

WRESTLING: USA Gathers Eight Overall Medals

The U.S. had a strong team effort with eight overall medals at the Heydar Aliyev Golden Grand Prix Finals on Friday. This prestigious event is the conclusion of FILA's annual Golden Grand Prix series.

Claiming silver medals in men's freestyle were: Shawn Bunch (Columbus, Ohio) at 60 kg/132 lbs.; Travis Paulson (Ames, Iowa) at 74 kg/163 lbs.; Jake Herbert (Evanston, Ill.) at 84 kg/185 lbs.; and Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. World Team members Alyssa Lampe and Elena Pirozhkova earned bronze medals in women's freestyle.

The United States captured six gold medals, three in each style, at the Pan American Cadet Championships held July 16-18. In total, the United States came home with 15 medals in the two styles. Claiming titles in men's freestyle were Tyler Goodwin (Gambrills, Md.) at 58 kg/127.75 lbs., Travis Mallo (Mason, City, Iowa) at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. and John Bolich (Hatboro, Pa.) at 85 kg/187.5 lbs. Winning Greco-Roman titles were Rylan Lubeck (Vesper, Wis.) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., Brad Dolezal (Marshfield, Wis.) at 69 kg/152 lbs. and Patrick Budd (Dumfries, Va.) at 76 kg/167.5 lbs.

The United States won the team title in Greco-Roman with 65 points, ahead of Brazil with 61 prs. The USA was second in freestyle with 78 points, trailing the team champions from Canada with 84 points.

YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES ROSTER ANNOUNCED

The USOC has announced its team members for competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, which begins with the Opening Ceremony on Aug. 14. The U.S. Team will include 82 athletes competing in 18 sports, the maximum number of qualified U.S. athletes. The Youth Olympic Games is an international multi-sport event held in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee that will take place every four years consistent with the current format of the Olympic Games. The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will run from Aug. 14-26, 2010, with an expected 3,600 athletes from 205 countries participating. The sport program will encompass all 26 sports that will be featured at the 2012 Olympic Games. Each National Olympic Committee may send up to 70 athletes in individual sports, should they qualify, as well as one girls team and one boys team. Basketball will be competed as 3-on-3 at the Youth Olympic Games, and for team quotas, is considered an individual sport. In all, the U.S. Team will consist of athletes in 18 sports: aquatics (swimming and diving), archery, badminton, basketball, boxing, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, judo, modern pentathlon, sailing, table tennis, taekwondo, track & field, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.

WEEKLY PREVIEW - JULY 19-25

ARCHERY: The 126th U.S. National Target Championships will take place July 22-25 in Hamilton, Ohio.

BASKETBALL: Following a day off on July 19, the 2010 USA U17 Women's World Championship Team will wrap up preliminary round play against Turkey at 5:30 p.m. on July 20 and Japan at 5:30 p.m. on July 21 (all times CEST, which is +6 hours from EDT). The top four finishing teams from each preliminary round group advance to the medal quarterfinals, scheduled for July 23, the semifinals are slated for July 24 and the gold and bronze medal games will be contested July 25.

USA Basketball will conduct the 2010 USA National Team training camp July 19-24 in Las Vegas and will culminate with the 2010 USA Basketball Showcase, a Blue- White intra-squad game that will be held on Saturday, July 24, 7 p.m. (PDT) at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV. The USA training camp will feature daily practice sessions from 12-3 p.m. (PDT) July 20-23 at UNLV's Cox Pavilion.

The USA's Las Vegas training camp will feature all available players of the 2010-12 USA Basketball Men's National Team and will be utilized to determine finalists for the 2010 USA World Championship Team that will participate in the 2010 FIBA World Championship. The 2010 World Championship is being held Aug. 28-Sept. 12 in Turkey.

DIVING: Fifty-two national titles and spots on the Junior World Championships team will be up for grabs when the USA Diving Junior and Age Group National Championships come to Tucson from July 23-31. Approximately 500 of the nation's top junior divers will be competing for titles at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center - Kasser Family Pool on the campus of the University of Arizona. The Junior National Championships, which will also be used to the select the U.S. squad for the 2010 FINA Junior World Championships, will run from July 23-27, with the Age Group National Championships to follow from July 28-31.

The field at the Junior National Championships will include some of the top divers in the United States. Mary Beth Dunnichay (Elwood, Ind.), the youngest member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team for any sport and a silver medalist at the 2009 FINA World Championships, will be participating. Also diving are Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.), a silver medalist at the 2009 World Championships and 2010 World Cup, and Kassidy Cook (The Woodlands, Texas), a 2010 World Cup team member.

ROWING: The United States will have 21 crews racing at the 2010 World Rowing Under 23 Championships later this week in Brest, Belarus. In total, 887 athletes in 309 crews from 57 nations will be vying for world titles.

SOFTBALL: The nine-time ISF Women's World Champion USA Softball Women's National Team, recently named the USOC Team of the Month for June, returns to action July 22-26 at the 2010 KFC World Cup of Softball presented by Six Flags in Oklahoma City. Team USA faces 2010 World silver medalist Japan, the 2008 Olympic Champion, World bronze medalist Canada, and the USA Softball Women's Futures National Team in their pursuit for a fourth title in five World Cups. Six women's games, including the July 26 Championship Game, will be aired live on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3.com.

The Men's Slow Pitch National Team will play Team Canada on July 24 in their second annual Border Battle in Oklahoma City during the World Cup of Softball. The game will be aired live at 3 p.m. Central.

TRACK & FIELD: The 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships, being held July 19-25, in Moncton, Canada, will be the largest sporting event ever held in Atlantic Canada. The Championships will include 44 medal events over six days of competition. The competition will be held at a new world-class stadium on the campus of the Universite de Moncton, which is being built especially for the event. Team USA won 17 total medals at the '08 meet, including 11 golds and a sweep of the relays, and nabbed 16 medals at the '09 WYC, six of them gold.

TRIATHLON: The 2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series continues this weekend with a stop in London, England.

WRESTLING: The Junior World Wrestling Championships will take place July 20-25 in Budapest, Hungary. USA Wrestling reports that the U.S. team competing represents one of the most experienced groups to compete in recent memory and a number of the team members are serious medal hopefuls.
